How do K12-powered online schools in California work?
How do K12-powered online schools in California work?
K12-powered online public schools in California are tuition-free, offer you and your child flexibility.* and combine physical materials and online tools to provide your child with a personalized education.
Curriculum for grades K–5 is mastery based, which encourages students to learn and grow at their own pace. A parent or guardian acts as the Learning Coach, and a significant time commitment is needed, as they are responsible for facilitating the student’s progress through daily lessons.
California-credentialed teachers provide instruction through online classroom sessions and work closely with Learning Coaches to monitor student progress.
As students transition from elementary school to middle and high school, the involvement of the Learning Coach changes. In middle school, the Learning Coach focuses on support and oversight to ensure the student understands the coursework and is motivated to complete it. In high school, the Learning Coach provides support and oversight, but students manage their own time and schedule more independently. High school students follow a structured schedule each day as they work on earning their diploma.

Compass Charter Schools (CCS) believes every scholar can be successful and understands and respects the need for scholars to learn at their own pace, using their own learning strengths. Our program is built to foster and develop scholars’ love of learning. CCS is committed to creating a collaborative virtual learning community, inspiring scholars to appreciate the ways in which arts and sciences nurture a curiosity for lifelong learning, and preparing scholars to take responsibility for their future successes.
We are proud of the quality program we provide. As we are a virtual school, many of our procedures take advantage of digital tools. For example, Learning Coach Lounges, scholar clubs, and communication are conducted virtually. For our scholar portfolios, we use an application that can be accessed on a phone, tablet, or computer. These digital tools allow us to enhance our scholars’ learning, as well as the relationships and communication we have with them and each other. While a virtual community is important to us, we also try to build in-person communities with a variety of enrichment events, workshops, and field trips.
